Man tries self-immolation

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JAN. 26. A 21-year-old man from Gujarat who allegedly planned to immolate himself during the Republic Day celebrations was detained by the police near Red Fort this morning. A bottle containing petrol was recovered from his possession. He was later released.

The incident occurred around 11-15 a.m. when the Republic Day Parade was about to enter North Delhi. Two mounted policemen, Narender and Vijay, deployed near Chhata Rail Chowk noticed a young man, later identified as Raju Bhai Kalu Bhai Masar, carrying a bottle with some liquid in it. Suspecting that it was some inflammable substance, the duo with Sub-Inspector Ritesh stopped him and seized the bottle. During his personal search, the police recovered a suicide note in which Raju stated that he was committing suicide as he had not received his salary for the past two years, from October 2002 to May 2004, due to which he was unable to meet the needs of his family. Raju used to work with a private contractor who was into cable laying work. In order to get his payment, he wrote to the authorities concerned but did not get any response. A dejected Raju then decided to attract the Government's attention towards his plight by immolating himself on Republic Day.
