Contributions to relief work highlighted

CHENNAI, JAN. 26. The 56th Republic Day celebrations by Central and State organisations here today were on a low key, as the State is yet to recover from the December 26, 2004, tsunami. At the functions, the departments listed their contributions to relief work.

At the Southern Railway headquarters, the General Manager, Ramesh Chandra, unfurled the national flag and inspected a guard of honour presented by the Railway Protection Force. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Ramesh Chandra said that this financial year, the zone completed the suburban gauge conversion between Chennai Egmore and Tambaram in a record four months.

Consequently, an additional carrying capacity of one lakh passengers was provided.

ICF achievement

The Integral Coach Factory General Manager, Shivendra Kumar, congratulated the employees on turning out a new aerodynamic-profiled diesel electric multiple unit, rail coach shells for the Malaysian Railways and stainless steel coaches for the Mumbai Rail Vikas.

The Chennai Port Trust, chairman, K.Suresh, said the port had moved to the third position among the major ports in traffic handling.

At the Chennai Petroleum Corporation, the Managing Director, S.V.Narasimhan, unfurled the flag and took the salute.

The Chief Commissioner of Central Excise, J.Sridharan, said the zone registered a 10 per cent increase in revenue collection till December, compared to the same period last year.

The Group General Manager of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, P.S.N.Kuty, said state-of-the-art exploration tools were inducted for three-dimensional seismic surveys in the Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram, Ariyalur and Pondicherry belt to find more oil and gas.

Awards distributed

Service awards were distributed in the Indian Oil Corporation office here where the General Manager, V.Ramaswamy, hoisted the flag.

The State Election Commissioner, V.Palanichamy, unfurled the flag at the commission office.
