WIJK AAN ZEE, JAN. 27. Viswanathan Anand squandered a good position against Dutch Leok van Wely and then worked his way to a draw in the 10th round of the Corus chess tournament here on Wednesday. Anand clearly held the upper hand in the middle game of this Sicilian Sveshnikov game. He captured three pawns in the space of seven moves to raise visions of victory. However, in the complications that followed, Anand played some inaccurate moves and allowed Wely to gain a rook for knight. Thereafter, Anand could at best get a draw in 42 moves. Anand now has six points with three rounds to go. Anand plays Judit Polgar on Friday. Thursday is a rest day.
In GM `C', Parimarjan Negi outplayed Dutch Joost Wempe in 32 moves for his third victory. He finished the job with a decisive rook sacrifice that led to an inevitable checkmate.
GM `C': Leon Pliester (Ned) (2.5) drew with Zeinab Mamedyarova (Aze) (3); Alexey Korotylev (Rus) (7.5) bt Bianca Muhren (Ned) (3.5); Wouter Spoelman (Ned) (4.5) bt Manuel Bosboom (Ned) (4); Joost Wempe (Ned) (1.5) lost to Parimarjan Negi (4.5); Natalia Zhukova (Ukr) (8) bt Tea Lanchava (Ned) (4); Vladimir Georgiev (Mkd) (7.5) drew with Evgeny Alekseev (Rus) (7.5).
