Maruti to set up training schools

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JAN. 27. Teaching car driving is set to take the organised route. Maruti Udyog Ltd. (MUL) is gearing to set up driver training schools across the country soon.

Indications are that it is just a few weeks away from launching its first car driving school. The first institute, it is gleaned, is more likely to be in Bangalore.

These driver training schools will come up in tandem with its dealers across the country. Sources said each driver training school would have investment from MUL and participation from a chosen local dealer

The move for driver training schools reflects MUL's larger concern for road safety. Though much of its initiatives on this front hitherto have been through SIAM (Society for Indian Automotive Manufacturers), the driver training school is its first direct effort at not just highlighting road safety but also doing some tangible work in this direction.

MUL, it is gathered, had studied the driver training schools in the U.K. and Europe before embarking on its model for India. The need for driver training is felt now more than ever before what with the number of cars on the Indian roads rising by the day. Further, express high ways are also coming at a faster pace. Given these, the need for ensuring accident-free driving on the roads assumes considerable importance.

Sources said an organised school could ensure flow of formal training to aspiring drivers. The driving schools proposed by Maruti would comprise classroom sessions, practical trainings and simulated exercise. The investment details and tie-up arrangements were still being worked out.
