Bellary gearing up for gram panchayat polls

BELLARY, JAN. 27. After the reorganisation of gram panchayat (GP) constituencies, one more has been added.

The number of seats has increased by 577 in Bellary district, taking the total to 3,405.

Previously, there were 188 GPs with 2,828 seats, with 1,228 seats reserved for women.

Except in Hospet, the number of GPs in the remaining six taluks has remained the same. In Hospet, the number of GPs has gone up to 23 from 22.

Similarly, Bellary taluk has recorded the highest increase of the number of GPs (146), followed by 112 GPs in Kudligi.

The process of preparation for conducting elections to the GPs in the district is almost complete.

The district administration is waiting for a decision from the Government in this regard.

According to the Deputy Commissioner, S.N. Jayaram, after the reorganisation, the number of seats reserved for women has gone up by 146, taking the total number of seats reserved for women to 1,374.

Following is the taluk-wise details in the order of number of GPs, total number of seats, number of seats for Scheduled Castes category, Scheduled Tribe category, Other Backward Castes "A," Other Backward Castes "B," and General category.

The figures in bracket indicate the number of seats allotted for general and women's categories.

Bellary: 40, 786 (475, 311); 146 (87, 59); 191 (112,79); 213 (129, 84); 49 (35, 14); and 187 (112, 75)

Sirguppa: 26, 433 (260, 173); 86 (50, 36); 84 (48, 36); 115 (64, 51); 28 (24, 4); and 120 (80, 40)

Sandur: 21, 421 (254, 167); 73, (42, 31); 123 (75, 48); 111 (68, 43); 28 (19, 9); and 86 (50, 36)

Hospet: 23, 395 (239, 156); 103 (62, 41); 81(48, 33); 105 (61, 44); 22 (15, 7); and 84 (53, 31)

Hagari Bommanahalli: 22, 410 (243, 167); 79 (45, 34); 56 (29, 27); 112 (66, 46); 22 (16, 6); and 141 (87, 54)
