Journalists' union protests attack on scribe

By Our Staff Correspondent

CHITRADURGA, JAN. 27. Members of the Chitradurga District Working Journalist's Union took out a silent march here on Thursday protesting against the attack on the Chitradurga correspondent of The Hindu by some persons who said they were followers of the Congress MP, N.Y. Hanumanthappa.

The journalists condemned Mr. Hanumanthappa's attitude towards the media and his outburst against a few journalists at the press conference of D. Manjunath, Minister for Higher Education, on Wednesday after the Republic Day celebrations.

They submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, S.R. Umashankar, urging him to provide security to the journalists in the district.

S.A. Arun Kumar of Udayavani; H. Laxman, general secretary of the union; and Ujjinappa and Rajanna Setty, senior journalists in the district, addressed the protesters and condemned the "high-handedness of politicians." They said that everyone should respect others' opinion and should not gag the press.

Mr. Umashankar assured the protesters the security will be provided to the journalists in the district.

Procession

Our Davangere Staff Correspondent reports:

The Davangere unit of the Karnataka Union of Working Journalists will take out a procession here on Friday protesting the attack on the Chitradurga correspondent of The Hindu on Wednesday.

The journalists, who met here on Thursday, condemned the behaviour of the MP at the press conference. They said that it was unbecoming of an MP to stoop to that level.

Expressing surprise over the incident, they demanded an apology from the MP. They urged the President of the All India Congress Committee, Sonia Gandhi, to initiate disciplinary action against the MP immediately.
