HAVANA, JAN. 27. Cuba, the "sugar bowl" of the world, now boasts of having `sweet-homes' literally. The construction of 20 houses in 2004 with bagasse, the sugarcane residue, and cement boards is being hailed by the authorities here as another significant diversification of sugarcane byproducts. "The country expects to build 700 houses with this type of board because of its economic advantages," said the president of the Business Group of Sugar Industry Constructions. Allaying any fears of bug infestation or fire, the authorities said the board made of a combination of sugarcane fibres (bagasse) and cement instead of synthetic resins are more resistant to such hazards than many other materials. Bagasse-cement panels are suitable for the construction of low-cost prefabricated houses and buildings . Prensa Latina
