Horrifying

Sir, — The incident in which army men pushed five civilians to their death from a train is horrifying.

Has the Indian army forgotten that the people are the masters in a democracy?

Sir, — The Railways should provide separate coaches for Army personnel. It is common for jawans to block unreserved bogies, inconveniencing hundreds of passengers. On several occasions, we have witnessed them getting entire bogies vacated, pushing civilians out saying they are "reserved" for the Army. Strangely, even railway authorities expect civilians to "cooperate."

Ananthapur, A.P.

Sir, — The Railways are also to blame for such incidents. A majority of passengers who travel short distances in remote areas do not know what is reservation, an AC compartment or sleeper. They know only a train. There are only one or two general compartments, which are overcrowded. When people cannot gain entry into them, they rush towards the empty, reserved compartments not knowing they are not authorised to use them.

Unfortunately, even after 50 years of independence, the policies of the Government are elitist.

J.B. Gupta,
Dehra Dun
