A great relief

Sir, — The U.C. Banerjee Committee's interim report on Godhra comes as a great relief to the people of India, particularly the minorities, who believe in the integrity of an independent judicial inquiry. The Chief Election Commissioner's clarification that the report can be discussed during the election campaign within limits is commendable. The report should be given wide publicity and openly debated.

Naheed Ashfaq,
Bangalore

Sir, — When Gujarat was burning because of the post-Godhra riots, there were many voices that lent support to the action-reaction theory of Narendra Modi. Many leaders even wondered openly why rights activists and secularists condemned the post-Godhra riots while remaining silent on the train tragedy. Most of them, strangely, have not reacted to the U.C. Banerjee report. Is it their turn to remain silent?

K. Hasan Ali,
Chennai
