By Our Staff Reporter

GUNTUR, JAN. 27. The Communist Party of India (Maoist) naxalites gunned down a lawyer at midnight on Wednesday at Gummanampadu in Bollapalli mandal of Guntur district. Four bullet injuries were found on his body.

The Vinukonda-based lawyer, Annapureddy Ravi Kumar (43), went out of his office at 7 p.m. His sister working in a local convent in Vinukonda received a phone call from Ravi Kumar at 11 p.m. stating that he would come late. He told her that he was at Gummanampadu to attend to some work with a family friend, Jaibharat Reddy.

When he did not turn up till 7 a.m. the next day, his brother-in-law, Uday Sankar, and the neighbour, Venkata Reddy, searched for him in the town and Gummanampadu. The family members were told that a body was found near the Zilla Parishad School and a motorcycle was also parked on the roadside. The body was identified as that of Ravi Kumar.

Threatening calls

Ravi Kumar was said to have received threats from Maoists three months ago alleging that he was involved in the killing of a Janashakti activist and he was informing the police about their activities. The Vinukonda lawyers boycotted courts today in protest against the murder of Ravi Kumar. Maoists of the Chennur-Sirpur dalam on Wednesday night shot dead a former sarpanch of Bopparam village in Kotapally mandal. He belonged to the Congress. According to the police, eight naxalites, led by Padmakka, Chennur-Sirpur area committee secretary, and her husband, Chippakurthi Ravi alias Sudershan, commander of Chennur dalam, went to the house of Lingaiah (50), who was running a fair price shop. He was taken to some distance and shot dead. The police said that Lingaiah was killed as he had reportedly refused to provide rice to naxalites. He used to supply rice to naxalites earlier, it is learnt.
