Traffic restored on Arasalar bridge

By Our Special Correspondent

KARAIKAL, JAN. 27. Army engineers today extended the Arasalar Bailey bridge that they had earlier constructed in record time four days after the tsunami struck. They strengthened the structure that had developed fresh cracks and restored traffic on the stretch.

Over 40 sappers of the Madras Engineering Group today worked between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to remove part of the already constructed 100-foot iron structure and relay the links up to the far side of the pier, covering the entire bridge.

The second phase of construction was necessitated by the fresh cracks that had developed on the concrete bridge, making it unsafe even for light vehicle traffic. Work began at 10 a.m., said Major Sachin Gavhane, Officer-In-Charge. With the aid of some Public Works Department staff, the team began removing the ramp part of the bailey bridge and digging up the tar on the bridge below. They then had to relay the support links right up to the pier on the Karaikal side. The remaining structure was assembled and put in place, providing access right through, from the Nagapattinam side to Karaikal.

"Generally, this operation will take about six hours, but we hope to finish it in four," Major Gavhane said about an hour and a half after work started in the morning. Once the bridge was completed, allowing light motor vehicle traffic only, a test ride was performed. It was open to the public only after an army engineer certified that it was "usable."

The Bailey bridge was constructed on December 30 in six hours by the same engineering corps, which also built a temporary causeway to Keechankuppam in Nagapattinam.

Traffic was stopped in the interim period, about four hours and diverted. Catamarans plied passengers to the other side for Rs. 5.
