`Mahasamrajya Pattabhishekom' begins

By Our Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM, JAN. 27. ``Mahasamrajya Pattabhishekom'' celebrations denoting the recital of Valmiki Ramayan in its original form within a period of nine days, being organised as part of the 'sathabhishekom ((84th birthday) of noted Bhagavath exponent Malliyoor Sankaran Namboodirippad, commenced here today.

The yanjam got under way with the lighting of the lamp by the head of the Sringeri Sarada Peethom, Swami Satchidananda, at a specially-built 'pandal' on the Malliyoor Mahaganapthy temple premises at Manjoor near Kuruppanthara.

Earlier, the ``bhadradeepa'' procession was received at Kuruppanthara junction and led to the pandal by the organisers. The procession depicting the traditional art forms of Kerala also consisted of 84 young `Krishnas' in the traditional yellow attire with peacock crowns and flute in their hands.

The day began with `Akhanda naama japam' at 6 a.m. At 4 p.m., the 125 acharyas who have arrived for the yajnom were ceremonially received. This was followed by recital of the concerned part from Skanda Purana. After lighting the traditional lamp by the chief guest, the yajna began with the recital of Valmiki Ramayan.

More than 125 pandits from various parts of India are participating in the highly auspicious, but rarely conducted yajnam. According to organisers, this is for the first time that 'mahasamrajya pattabhishekom' was being held in Kerala. In India, it has been held twice before, they said.

The yajnam consists of reciting Valmiki Ramayan in its original Sanskrit and elucidating the meaning. This effort is being carried out as a `navaahom' (yajnam to be completed during a period of nine days). The acharyas who participate in the yajnom include Krishnapremi Maharaj, Shyamsunderparasar Sasthri, Mumbai Chandrasekhara Sarama, Professor Vaidyalinga Sarma, Nechoor Venkitaraman, Anjom Krishnan Namboodiri, Rangaji, Hariji, Perumapalli Kesavan Namboodiri and Kandamangalam Subrahmonian Namboodiri.

The yajnam will conclude on February 6, which also happens to be the brithday of Malliyoor Sankaran Namboodiripad. The Union Minister for Home, Shivraj Patil, the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, the former Chief Minister K. Karunakaran, and others will participate in the Sathabhishekom meeting scheduled on the day.
