Maoists kidnap over 1,000 students, teachers in Nepal

KATHMANDU, JAN. 27. About 1,100 students and teachers were abducted by Maoists in two separate districts of Nepal, according to a local radio today.

According to the Kantipur FM radio, Maoist rebels on Wednesday abducted 650 or so students and 47 teachers from five schools in Sankhuwasabha district in eastern Nepal. The students were of the primary and secondary levels.

The captive teachers and students have been taken to an undisclosed place towards the north of the district, the radio said.

In a similar incident on Wednesday more than 400 students and teachers were abducted by the insurgents from Dhading district. The Maoists kidnapped the students and the teachers to involve them in indoctrination sessions, the radio claimed.

Landmine blast

In yet another incident on Wednesday, a Royal Nepal Army Major was among six persons killed and an equal number injured when Maoist rebels triggered a landmine explosion on the Pokhara-Baglung Highway in the country's west. Police said today that the Major, Ravi Gartaula, Police Inspector Chandrajyoti Chaudhari and three other security personnel were killed when their van was blown up by the landmine blast at Bajung village in Parbat district. Three other security personnel were also injured, they added. A taxi moving on the highway was also hit by the landmine killing the taxi driver and injuring three passengers. Maoists and security forces exchanged fire for half-an-hour after the incident.
