SRINAGAR, JAN. 27. The Finance Minister and People's Democratic Party leader, Muzaffar Hussain Baig, escaped an attempt on his life during an election campaign in Kashmir. In another incident, 26 were injured as militants hurled grenades at an election office. As the parties contesting the civic polls were wrapping up their campaigning for the first phase in Baramulla and Kupwara districts, Mr. Baig had a miraculous escape when a grenade was thrown at him in Wangipora near Sumbal. Reports said he was on his way to the town along with the PDP spokesperson, Basharat Bukhari, when he was stopped by his workers. As he came out of the car, a grenade was thrown at him but it did not explode. The DIG Kashmir Range, H.K. Lohia, told The Hindu that no unexploded grenade was recovered. Mr. Baig and other leaders were safe. In the south Kashmir township of Pampore, militants targeted the Tehsildar office where a large number of people had gathered to file nominations for the municipal elections. Reports said that at 1 p.m., two grenades landed on the premises. Witnesses said that gunshots were heard after the grenade explosions.
Yasin, Shabir held
The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman, Yasin Malik, and the Democratic Freedom Party president, Shabir Shah, were arrested in Bandipore when they were on way to continue their anti-election campaign.
