Eco awareness programme on January 29

PATHANAMTHITTA, JAN. 27. The Pampa Parirakshna Samithi (PPS), an eco group that has been campaigning for the cause of river Pampa for the past 11 years, would be organising an environment education programme and awareness campaign with the support of the State Government and the local bodies as part of the proposed Pampa Action Plan at Kozhencherry on January 29.

In a statement issued here today, the PPS general secretary, N.K.Sukumaran Nair, said that the Water Resources Minister, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, will inaugurate the programme at the Mar Thoma Retreat Centre at Maramon near Kozhencherry at 10 a.m.

The local MP, C. S. Sujatha, P. J. Kurien, MP, Malethu Saraladevi, MLA, the District Panchayat president, K. K. Royson and the District Collector, Rabeendra Kumar Agarwal, will also address the inaugural function. The Member Secretary of the State Pollution Control Society, K. V. Indulal, will deliver the keynote address.

Bijoy Nandan of Centre for Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Alappuzha, will talk on the anthropogenic interference on river Pampa and its effects on bio-diversity, says Mr Nair.

Jacob P.Alex, practicing lawyer at the Kerala High Court, will talk on the legal and policy matters pertaining to disaster management in the State.

S. Sreekumar of Irinjalakuda Christ College will deliver a lecture on disaster management.

S. Swaminathan of the Kerala Water Authority, Varghese George and former Physics professor at the Birla Institute of Technology, Pilani, T.N. Ramakrishnan Kurup, will also address the programme.
