Power supply to be made disruption-free

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM. Jan. 27. The Government is planning to make the power distribution system in the city a disruption-free one, the Minister for Electricity, Aryadan Mohammed, has said.

He was inaugurating the KSEB's 66 KV sub-station at Vattiyoorkavu today.

The construction of two new 66 KV sub-stations, one at the Power House buildings in the city and the second inside the legislature complex, will be completed by March this year. "We have prepared plans costing Rs.169 crores for the improvement of the power supply in the capital city," he said.

The KSEB will provide five lakh power connections in the next one year. With this there will be no pending applications for power connections. The Board has also decided that power connections, whether in the BPL category or otherwise, will be provided within a week of the consumer submitting the application, provided that the electric post is available at the locality, he said.

`Not modern'

In his presidential address K. Mohankumar, MLA, said the power distribution network in Thiruvananthapuram cannot be called modern by any means. "A falling tree branch or a strong summer shower can cause havoc in the city's power grid," he said and added that there have been instances when the power supply had gone out even as the Minister for Electricity was giving a speech.

The new sub-station will benefit about 50,000 people living in Mannammoola, Kuravankonam, PTP Nagar, Vattiyoorkavu, Karakulam and Vilappil. There will be a 20 per cent increase in the voltage in these areas. The power for this sub-station will be drawn from the Paruthippara-Thirumala 220 KV line.

There are two transformers each with 10 MVA capacity, here. With the commissioning of this sub-station, the transmission loss in this area is also expected to go down significantly. Work on this sub-station was begun in 1980 and was completed by the private firm Larsen & Toubro in 2000. This project has been executed at a cost of Rs.4.67 crores.
