A milestone in stone industry

By Our Special Correspondent

JAIPUR, JAN. 27. The `Stonemart-2005', beginning here tomorrow, will showcase a wide range of stones offered by Rajasthan and provide an extensive market to the entrepreneurs in the stone industry. Jaipur is hosting the international supermarket of stones and stone products for the third time.

Besides the participants from all over the country, about 1,000 delegates from 40 countries, including Britain, China, Japan, Italy and Germany, will participate in the five-day event. The organisers include the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

The Chairman and Managing Director of the Rajasthan Industrial Development and Investment Corporation (RIICO), Rakesh Hooja, told reporters here today that the business and trade deals worth over Rs. 200 crores were likely to be finalised in the buyer-seller meets during the mart. Business worth Rs. 135 crores and Rs. 140 crores, respectively, was reported in the stonemarts organised in 2000 and 2003.

Mr. Hooja said this year's stonemart would prove to be a milestone in taking the economy to new horizons and boost investments in the stone and tourism industries, besides offering new opportunities for self-employment.

RIICO has given an area measuring 15,000 square metres at the Export Promotion Park in Sitapura industrial area here free of cost for holding the mega event. Mr. Hooja said the buyer-seller meets would be organised between January 29 and 31 and more time would be devoted to one-on-one business meetings between the foreign and Indian participants.

The Rajasthan Industries Minister, Narpat Singh Rajvi, will inaugurate the stonemart. Karnataka will have the biggest pavilion in the mart, while Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Jharkhand will also hold their exhibitions during the event.
