SHIMLA, JAN. 27. Professor J.S. Grewal, Chairman of the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies (IIAS) here, and Professor Mrinal Miri, former Director of the Institute, have been conferred Padma awards this year. Prof Miri has been conferred Padma Bhushan and Prof Grewal Padma Shri. This is the first time that two former heads of IIAS have been honoured with the prestigious awards in the same year. Prof Grewal, an eminent historian, has authored 20 books, edited more than a dozen, and co-authored seven. He was the Director of the institute before becoming the Chairman in November last year. He was also the Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. Prof Mrinal Miri, an eminent philosopher, was Director of the Institute from 1993 to 1999. Presently he is the Vice-Chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong.
