College girl found murdered
RAMANATHAPURAM JAN. 27. A college girl was found murdered at Therkuthoppu near Devipattinam, 15 km from here, today. Sources said the body of Dhanalakshmi (21) with injuries was found near a well. She was studying in the Government Arts College here.
Man falls into molten tar, dies
SALEM JAN. 27. A worker, engaged in road laying works in the city, fell into a machine and was charred to death in molten tar and stone mix last night. The police said Shankar (28) of Mecheri was standing on the machine and preparing the tar mix, done in high temperature. A sand-laden lorry, passing through the newly-laid road despite warning cries from road workers, dashed against the machine and in the impact, Shankar fell into the machine. The police are looking for the lorry driver, Kuppusamy .
Takes over charge
CHENNAI JAN. 27. R. Gopinathan Nair today took over as the new Additional General Manager, Southern Railway. Joining the Indian Railway Service of Engineers in 1969, he he served in various capacities including as Chief Engineer (Construction), Southern Railway; Divisional Railway Manager, Chennai, and Additional General Manager, North Frontier Railway, Guwahati. He underwent training in the Japanese National Railways and the Danish National Railways, says a railway release.
Special train
COIMBATORE JAN. 27. The Southern Railway, Palakkad Division, will operate a special train from Coimbatore to Chennai on January 30. The train (622) to be run via Tirupur, Erode, Salem, Jolarpet, Katpadi would have an AC two-tier coach, one AC three-tier coach, 10 sleeper class coaches, three general second class coaches and two luggage-cum-brake vans. Advance reservation for the train is already open. The train will leave from Coimbatore at 23.45 hours on Sunday and arrive at Chennai Central on January 31, at 08.15 hours, says a release from the Palakkad division.
Varsity launches `virtual library'
CHENNAI JAN. 27. The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University today launched a "virtual library," in which holdings are available in electronic storehouses. The user will be able to find the source documents speedily and easily. The objective of the library, according to the Vice-Chancellor, C.V. Bhirmanandham, is to convert major full text holdings into electronic form using the full text medical databases, set up a hardware infrastructure to effectively disseminate the full text information to all remote and nearby colleges and disseminate information on the university campus and to medical colleges affiliated to universities within Tamil Nadu. The University will provide training to librarians of the affiliated institutions on its use. It will assist them in the provision of infrastructure required to link with the virtual library facility. The Health and Family Welfare Minister, Thalavai Sundaram, inaugurating the "virtual library," said the facility would provide another opportunity to students to update their knowledge. He inaugurated a own book reading facility on the campus which can be used by students for own book reading and for combined studies. The Director of Medical Education, P. Vijayalakshmi, said the library would be useful to students, as they could download latest material and access latest developments in the medical field.
Youth commits suicide
TUTICORIN JAN.27. Ayyadurai (19) died after consuming poison at Koppampatti near here on Monday. Police said the deceased was bothered over some personal problems, and hence took the extreme step by consuming pesticide at his house.
Fast observed
TUTICORIN JAN.27. As many 18 cadres belonging to the All-India Youth Federation observed a fast at Eral near here today, demanding immediate repair of battered roads in the area.
Two held for stealing vehicle
TUTICORIN JAN.27. The police arrested two vehicle lifters, G. Ram and Prabhu, here on Tuesday, on the charge of stealing a vehicle belonging to one Vasantha at Thermal Nagar on January 23. According to police sources, the stolen vehicle was recovered and the accused were remanded to judicial custody.
