THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 27. The Congress party returned to factional activities with the Karunakaran group deciding to boycott the Assembly debate on the three-day motion of thanks to the Governor's address. The decision to boycott the debate has been taken in protest against the short shrift the faction was being given in the party and in governance. A five-member delegation of the faction met the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, to register the faction's protest. The delegation, comprising P.P. George, M.P. Gangadharan, D. Sugathan, P. Sankaran and E.M. Augusthy, apprised the Chief Minister of the faction's decision to boycott the debate, which will begin on Monday. The Chief Minister denied that he had ignored the faction. He said that he had been meeting the veteran leader K. Karunakaran to update him on the developments till he was requested not to do so. The Karunakaran faction boycotted the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting held earlier in the day. They preferred to hold a group meeting at Mr. Karunakaran's residence when the CLP meet was on. The CLP meet elected new executive committee and office-bearers, as the incumbents had been elevated as Ministers. K.C. Joseph had earlier been elected as CLP secretary, replacing Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan. V.D. Satheesan was elected as Congress party Whip replacing K.C. Venugopal and D. Sugathan was elected as treasurer replacing Adoor Prakash. The executive committee has been expanded to include A.K. Antony, K. Sankaranarayanan, G. Karthikeyan, M.M. Hassan, K.V. Thomas, M.A. Kuttappan, Kadavur Sivadasan, P. Sankaran, K. Sudhakaran and T.H. Mustapha.
