THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 27. The Government proposes to introduce welfare schemes for plantation workers, gold jewellery workers, tree climbers and workmen in shops and commercial establishments, the Governor, R.L. Bhatia, announced in his address to the Assembly today. For plantation workers, the Government will also implement a habitat housing scheme in association with local bodies and plantation managements. Houses built under the scheme will replace the existing labour lines that have become uninhabitable, the Governor said. The Government, Mr. Bhatia said, intends to undertake complete revamping of the existing training courses for industrial workers. It proposes to develop five industrial training institutes as Centres of Excellence with assistance from the Union Government. It also proposes to impart Spoken English skills to all trainees with the help of the State Information Technology Mission. The Kerala Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Fund Board will set up a Building Technology Institute to impart modern training in different trades of construction work The Governor announced that the Government plans to strengthen the existing ESI hospitals and open more ESI dispensaries. Old Age Homes for infirm construction workers would also be built.
