Address lacks sense of realism: LDF

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 27. The Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) said the policy address delivered by the Governor, R.L. Bhatia, in the Assembly today was totally lacking in sense of realism and a proper appreciation of the realities in the State.

Giving their initial response to the Governor's address, the Opposition leaders pointed out that the address was silent on several crucial issues such as the crisis in the farm and industrial sectors, the plight of students who had secured admission in private self-financing professional colleges, the fate of traditional industries in the State and the rising unemployment.

The Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, said the address was nothing but a reiteration of what had been stated in last year's policy address. The address contained no proposal to tackle the crisis in the agricultural, industrial and educational sectors. In the case of farmers, the situation was serious as no measures had been taken to mitigate the difficulties consequent on the drought in the State over a year ago. Although a huge package had been promised, nothing had come out of it, he added.

Referring to the Governor's claim that the law and order situation in the State was quite satisfactory, Mr. Achuthanandan pointed out that as many as five persons had died in police custody during the last one week. He also came down heavily on the decision to ban State lottery and said the decision would cause serious hardship to around 3.5 lakh persons who were dependent on lottery for their survival.

The CPI leader, K.P. Rajendran, said the policy address was silent about the crisis in the traditional industrial sector and the consequences of the Government decision to slash the allocation for three-tier local bodies. The reference in the policy address about the Modernisation Government Programme (MGP) was intended only to cover up the large-scale downsizing that the Government planned to undertake. The Government's paddy procurement programme had floundered as enough money had not been made available for the purpose, he said.

The RSP leader, A.A. Aziz, said there was no merit in the promised implementation of minimum wages in several industries as minimum wage norms were being violated in most industries in the State. He also took exception to the Governor's promises relating to the Employees State Insurance (ESI) scheme and said there was no meaning in making tall claims and big promises when the ESI infrastructure was creaking for want of Government support and absence of adequate number of medical professionals.
