Awarded President's medal

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM JAN. 27. P. Jhonson Varkey, Assistant Commandant, Central Industrial Security Force, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thumba, here has been awarded the President's Police Medal for Meritorious Service. He was with the Special Protection Group for nine years. A former national athlete, he was captain of Kerala Athletic team in 1982.

Coast Guard school gesture

Commodore S. Pradeep, Commander, Indian Coast Guard, Western region, Mumbai, called on the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, here today and apprised him of the Coast Guard's projects and activities in Kerala. He also handed over a draft of Rs.57, 600 to the Chief Minister, being the contribution of the students of Indian Coast Guard Public School in Daman, for tsunami victims.

Assumes charge

R. Gopinathan Nair, IRSE, assumed charge as Additional General Manager, Southern Railway today. A B.Sc. (Engineering) graduate from the University of Kerala and M. Tech. (Structural Engineering) from IIT, Chennai, he joined the Indian Railway Service of Engineers in 1969. Prior to joining as Additional General Manager, Southern Railway, he worked as Additional General Manager, Northeast Frontier Railway, Guwahati. He has undergone training in Japanese National Railways and Danish National Railways for field training and did his post-graduation in Environmental Engineering from the University of DELFT, Holland.

Elected to dental association

K. Nanda Kumar, Professor & HOD, Department of Periodontics, Government Dental College, Thiruvananthapuram, has been elected the National Vice-President, Indian Dental Association, for the year 2005. He took charge at a function held in Mumbai. He is also member of Dental Council of India and Dean Faculty of Dentistry, University of Kerala.

Kalamandalam awards

Thrissur Jan. 27. The Cultural Affairs Minister, A. Anil Kumar, will present the Kerala Kalamandalam awards and fellowships at a function on February 1.

The Collector, K.S. Premachandra Kurup, will release the book Chittapeduthiya Kathakalippadangal.

A five-day dance and music festival will be held at Kalamandalam from February 1.

The following are some of the programmes: February 1: Dance show by Kerala Kalamandalam, folk songs by Alappuzha Navajeevan Samskarika Vedi; February 2: Chakyarkoothu, Krishnanattom, nagaswaram recital by Vettikkavala Sasikumar; February 3: Kalaripayattu, Panchavadyam, Chavittunatakam, Mizhavil Thayambaka, Hindustani recital by Gayatri, Kathakali; February 4: Mudiyettu, Tholpavakoothu, Mohiniyattom by Neena Prasad, music concert by Renjini-Gayatri; February 5: `Sangeeta Samanvayam' by Kalamandalam Hyderali; Bharathanatyam by Alarmel Valli; Kuchipudi by Shailaja, Theyyam, folk songs by Thrissur Karinthalakoottam.

Man hacked

to death

A 36-year-old man was hacked to death at Mama Bazar area, near Chavakkad, last night. The police identified the deceased as Valiyakath Kadavil Shamzuddin.

The police have launched a manhunt for two persons suspected to be involved in the murder. The two are neighbours of the deceased person.

Hindu unity move lauded

Thrissur, Jan. 27. The Yogakshema Sabha has lauded the efforts of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary, Vellappally Natesan, to forge a broad Hindu unity. In a release on Thursday, the general secretary of the Yogakshema Sabha, Sreekumar Thamarappilly, said the Sabha would find areas of cooperation with Mr. Natesan. Quoting Mr. Natesan, the release described as unreasonable the alleged attempts to deny the rights of the Namboodiri community.

Stop polluting

canals

ALAPPUZHA JAN. 27. The Tourism Minister, K.C. Venugopal, has warned that those who dump garbage and liquid wastes into the canals of Alappuzha, which are being cleaned now, will be given exemplary punishment. He directed the District Collector to take action against those who violated the directive. The Minister also gave orders to the irrigation department to close the pipes discharging wastewater from the slaughter houses here to the canals.

Youth festival

KOZHIKODE JAN. 27. The Mayor, Thottathil Raveendran, inaugurated a programme at the Government Model Higher Secondary School here today in connection with the launch of the work on a `pandal' being put up for the conduct of the State Higher Secondary Youth Festival to be held here from February 6 to 9. The school principal, K. Pokkerkutty; headmistress, Sreelatha; and pandal committee convener, Mohammed Ismail, were present.

Poet honoured

P.N. Chandran, playwright and poet, was honoured on the occasion of his completing 50 years in the field of theatre and poetry. The event was organised under the aegis of Bhasha Samanwaya Vedi and the Central Library. M.N. Paloor, poet, presented a `ponnada' to Mr. Chandran at a meeting of poets. The poets Radhamani, Malayath Appunni, Ulloor C. Mahadevan and Preetha participated.

Inaugurated

KOLLAM Jan. 27. The Kollam DCC president, Sooranad Rajashekaran, today inaugurated the new office of the district unit of the Kerala Gazetted Officers Union (KGOU). The district president of the KGOU, C. Rajan Pillai, presided over the inaugural function. The State president of the Union, Jose Kurien Kattukaran, the State vice-president, P.K. Jacob, and the State secretary, C. Gopalakrishnan, among others addressed the function. The new office is located at Shankar Nagar in the city.

Debate

The president of `Anweshi', Ajitha, will inaugurate a debate on `Alapad: environment and rehabilitation.' The programme being organised by the Yuva Kala Sahithi, will be held at the Karunagapally YMCA Hall at 4 p.m. on January 29.

Awarded

The annual A.P. Kalakkad Award for this year has been earmarked for short story. At a press conference here today, the president of the Trust, Erumeli Parameshwaran Pillai, and secretary, M. Karunakaran, said that the short story, `Thattarakudiyile Vigrahangal,' authored by Chandramathi, has been selected for the award. The selection was made from 37 entries. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 5001 and a citation. It will be presented to the winner at a function to be held at Sooranad near here on February 8.

Seminar

As part of the cooperative centenary celebrations, a national seminar on cooperation will be held here on January 28. The seminar to be held at the Fatima College auditorium will be inaugurated by the Minister for Cooperation, M.V. Raghavan. Three subjects will be presented at the seminar. The subjects are: Vision for autonomous and competitive cooperatives, Human resources development and management in cooperatives and Cooperative credit structure: the future perspectives.
