NEW DELHI, JAN. 27. The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, today lauded the National Cadet Corps for its selfless service in providing relief and rehabilitation to the tsunami victims in South India. Addressing the Prime Minister's Rally at the Garrison Parade Ground here in the Capital, Dr. Singh said the cadets had demonstrated high standards of humanism through their work. "I convey my thanks to the magnificent work done by NCC for the victims of this tragedy in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala,'' he said. Dr. Singh said that for the past 55 years the NCC had being instilling values of patriotism and nation-building by knitting together youths from different parts of the country. "The training imparted in the NCC enables the cadets to pursue careers in defence, social service and various other fields. The cadets are also involved in promoting adult education, afforestation and creating awareness about HIV/AIDS,'' he added About 1,800 NCC cadets from different States and Union Territories participated in this year Republic Day Parade. Earlier, the Prime Minister gave away the Champion Director's Trophy to Pallavi Yadav of Maharashtra and the Prime Minister's Banner to Rohit Pandit, also of the same State. On the occasion, the NCC cadets gave a parasailing display besides conducting mock reconnaissance mission to find out enemy positions and slithering down a M-17 helicopter as a mock anti-terrorist operation. The cadets also presented a cultural programme in which folk dances of different parts of the country were presented and patriotic songs sung. The Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, the Chief of Army Staff, General N.C. Vij; the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Arun Prakash; and the Air Chief Marshal, S.P. Tyagi, were also present at the function.
