CHENNAI, JAN. 27 . In a fast changing, competitive world there are numerous factors, which can cause stress in human beings. Working against a deadline, pressure at the workplace, chronic health problems and traffic jams, particularly while on the way to work, are some of them. Quoting psychologist, Sanjay Chugh, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), which organised a conference on "executive lifestyle and stress management" here on Thursday, says that 70 to 90 per cent of adults visit primary care physicians for treatment of stress-related problems. Research shows that stress can actually increase one's performance. It could stimulate one's faculties to discover one's true potential. Psychologists also second the opinion that some stress situations could boost one's inner potential and could be helpful in a creative manner. Changing one's lifestyle, listening to soothing music, deep breathing and physical exercises are among the most-effective stress-busters. Dr. K. Gireesh, Chief Consultant, Sarala Neurology Hospital and Research Centre, said that nervous breakdown was not the same as stress. It was the direct result of prolonged exposure to stressful work conditions and situations. Breakdowns developed slowly and could take years before the symptoms manifested themselves as physical and emotional problems. A nervous breakdown was easily recognisable and reversible during the first several stages. Inaugurating the programme, Swami Suddhananda of Samvit Sagar Trust, said that no role for a human being was a source of stress, if one knew how to play the role. One should know how to live. Knowledge of oneself and clear thoughts would help one to handle various situations. The human body was just an instrument and no instrument should be blamed as the cause of stress.
