NIT to host `Pragyan' from tomorrow

TIRUCHI, JAN. 27 . The National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, is hosting a three-day `Pragyan', a grand common platform, bringing together industrial and corporate world, and upcoming generation of engineers of all specialisations and managers.

About 1,000 students from 40 engineering colleges, including NITs and IITs, are to participate in the three-day event, starting on January 29.

At stake are a plethora of prizes all worth Rs. 3.5 lakhs.

The mega event, organised by students themselves, involves an overall expenditure of Rs.10 lakhs mobilised from IBM, main sponsor, Hewlett Packard, co-sponsor, and several other sponsors, including Tata Consultancy Services, Microsoft, and Texas Instruments, said the Director (in-charge) of the NIT, P. Subramanian. It would be made an annual event henceforth involving participation of students.

Dr. Subramanian urged schools and colleges in and around Tiruchi to send their students to observe the exhibits put up for Avishkar, a functional model contest, involving design and construction of real-time models to perform special tasks. The first prize for this prestigious contest is Rs. 25,000.

In Samadhan, a problem-solving contest, a set of industrial problems will be given to the contestants, inviting solutions.

The plethora of other events comprise Anveshanam (paper presentation contest), Automata (robot design contest), Byte-Code (online programming contest), Technical Quizzes, Arthashastra (Management events), Turing Machine (software presentation contest) AdAventure (software contests), Electronique (hardware design contest), D-Sign (CAD contest), Sanrachana (structure building contest), Visheeshana (material science event), Operation Chemika (chemical sciences contest), and Dexter's Lab (workshops and demos)

Guest lectures are to be delivered by noted personalities of the corporate world: Craig Chatterton, Country Manager, SuperSoft India on `Working for big companies vs small companies', S. Rajagopal, Homi Baba Chair, National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore, on `Nuclear energy in India', K. Raghuathan, Director, Program Management, Texas Instruments, India, on `Technology Migration', P.K. Mukerjee, CEO, Sargen and Lundy, Subsidiary of Larsen and Tourbo, Baroda, on `Energy for the next millennium', T.V. Kamalak Kannan, Principal Consultant and Team Leader, Tata Consultancy Services, on `Current trends in IT', and Manjula Sridhar, Program Manager, Wireless Networking Group, Lucent Technologies, on `Wireless 3G technologies'.

Among the spotlights are a laser show, happening in the city for the first time, by a professional from Bangalore, Hypnotics Demo by V. Nagesh, president, Hypnosis Academy of India, Hyderabad, movie show, and a `miracle exposure programme' in which the performer, Narendra, will demonstrate scientific basis behind miracles.
