Oil slick may have polluted well: expert

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan. 27. Investigations conducted by the Mining and Geology Department following reports about the presence of oil in a borewell at Kovalam have discounted the possibility of an oil deposit in the region. Scientists who analysed water samples collected from the well said the greasy film on the water surface could have originated from an oil slick in the sea near the coast. The Mining and Geology Director, N. Krishnakumar, said the oil could have entered the borewell through crevices in the underground rocks or the upper sandy layer. "There is also the possibility that some miscreants had poured oil into the well," he said.
