KOCHI, JAN. 27. The Local Area Environmental Committee (LAEC) identified an outlet of the Cochin Minerals and Rutiles Limited (CMRL), at Pathalam bund in the Periyar, discharging untreated effluent into the river. According to a release issued by the LAEC here today, the inspection followed a tip-off and the team collected samples of the green-coloured effluent at 8.30 p.m. on Wednesday. The sample collected from the outlet was forwarded to the Central Laboratory of the Pollution Control Board for analysis. The results showed the parameters amounting to hazardous sludge, with high concentration of iron, chloride and cadmium, said P.K. Ibrahim, chairman of the LAEC. The committee is expected to forward the analysis report to the Pollution Control Board for follow-up action. When contacted, a CMRL official refused to agree with the findings. Terming its effluents as non-hazardous, he said that no one from the committee contacted the company after collecting the samples.
