KOCHI, JAN. 27. Greens are mounting pressure on the authorities to protect the Mangalavanam bird sanctuary. A group of green activists has decided to take a pledge on Saturday at the buffer zone of the sanctuary to protect it. The function will be held on Salim Ali Road at 10 a.m.
Public support sought
The High Court should reconsider its decision to construct a parking bay at the buffer zone area as it will jeopardise the bird sanctuary, said a joint statement issued by the green activists John Peruvanthanam, Rajendraprasad, M.R. Sethumadhavan and K.V. Ajayakumar. They also sought public support for protecting mangroves and Mangalavanam. The district committee of the Solidarity Youth Movement has urged the authorities to desist from the move that may damage the sanctuary. The Government should also conduct a study to assess the ecological importance of Mangalavanam, a secretariat meeting of the organisation said. The meeting also urged the Government to present all the discussions and papers related to setting up of Smart City in Kochi. The conditions laid down for setting up the project like 1,000 acres at the rate of Re. 1 per acre and power and water at subsidised rates should be subjected to public debate. A debate on whether the people really needed this project should also be held, the meeting opined. K.A. Faizal, district president, presided.
