Gannavaram airport recorded a maximum temperature of 30.3 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 20.1 degrees Celsius on Thursday. Humidity, which was 89 per cent in the morning, dropped to 70 per cent in the evening.

Commodity rates

Following are the prices (in rupees per kg) of the essential commodities in the local wholesale markets on Thursday, according to the Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry: groundnut oil - 49, palmolein oil - 38, sunflower oil - 49, tamarind (flower variety) - 19 to 25, tamarind (karipuli variety) - 32 to 36, chillis (AC) - 20 to 27, chillis (non-AC) - 12 to 14, rice (2716) - 12, rice (superfine) - 12.50, rice (samba masoori) - 14 to 14.50, rice (sona masoori) - 15 to 16, black gram - 18.35 to 21.70, red gram - 21 to 26.50.

Plea to VMC

The city committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has asked the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation authorities to immediately withdraw their decision to hike the trade licences, as it will adversely affect small and marginal businessmen. The traders were already burdened on account of house and water taxes and advertisement charges, it said.s

Fishing nets for

tsunami-hit

The Vijayawada Sindhi Seva Samiti Trust has decided to distribute fishing nets to about 2,000 fishermen in Nellore district who lost their nets after the recent tsunami wave attack. The trust will also distribute textbooks/notebooks/stationery material among 700 children in the affected areas. Though there had been individual contributions from the community to the tsunami-affected families, the trust wanted members of the Sindhi community to join hands in extending the necessary help and hence, collected the required funds. The trust president Manoharlal Achhpeliya and secretary, Chandra Prakasah Sachdeva, would personally distribute the relief material to the affected families, according to a press release.
