MUMBAI,
JAN. 28
. Noted writer Amitav Ghosh has won the Hutch Crossword Award for his best original English fiction "The hungry tide" at a function held here last night.
The translation award went to Jatindra Kumar Nayak for translating Chandrasekhar Rath's "Yantrarudha" from Oriya to English. The winners received cash prizes of Rs. 3 lakhs each. The are given in two categories Original English Fiction as well as Indian Language Fiction translations into English.
The idea behind the awards is to encourage and promote good Indian writing in the same way as prizes like the Booker. The award was instituted in 1998 but was temporarily suspended in 2000. Shortlisted in the first category were Raj Kamal Jha's "If you are afraid of heights"; Shashi Deshpande's "Moving on"; I Allan Sealy's "Brainfever bird"; and Amitav Ghosh's "The hungry tide."
