NGO's gesture to victims in coastal areas

By Our Staff Reporter

NAGERCOIL, JAN. 28. The SOS Children's Villages of India, a non-governmental organisation, has decided to strengthen a family programme in which as of now about 1,000 children were being provided financial assistance to pursue their education and sustenance through their families in tsunami-affected areas of the State.

Speaking to The Hindu recently, J.N. Kaul, the president of the organisation said their organisation had already started constructing shelters in Cuddalore, Karaikal, Colachel and Akkampettai.

"We plan to construct 600 permanent houses for the tsunami-affected, besides providing them with boats and other implements".

As many as 96 tsunami-affected families of Singaravelan Colony near Colachel in the district have found a ray of hope after they were shifted recently to shelters built by us, Mr. Kaul said.

We have adopted the village for long-term rehabilitation, he said.
