WARANGAL, JAN. 28. The CPI(M) general secretary, Harkishan Singh Surjeet, today exhorted the party cadre to take advantage of the present political situation and expand the Communist movement and the party. At a gathering in this heartland of Telangana region at the conclusion of the party's 21st State conference today, Mr. Surjeet said the country was witnessing a unique situation where "the bourgeois parties are dependent on Communists to stay in power." The Communist forces should use this opportunity to extend their reach and launch powerful movements to rally people around the party's programme and agenda. Referring to the armed struggle of the 1940s against the Nizam State and for land reforms in this region, Mr. Surjeet said that he felt the "spirit of Telangana movement" rising again. "The Nizam has gone but people still have neither got land nor have their basic problems been addressed." There was no alternative but to build a powerful Communist movement. "Your struggles will inspire and galvanise the entire country again."
Maoist killings
The West Bengal Chief Minister and the CPI(M) Polit Bureau member, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, said that despite initiating the most radical land reforms and decentralisation of power to panchayats, the Maoists were targeting the Left Front Government. Sitaram Yechury, Polit Bureau member, expressed confidence that the growing strength of the CPI (M) would give a "mighty answer" to all those who predicted the end of socialism and Communism after the fall of Soviet Union.
