Cricket
By Our Special Correspondent
MUMBAI, JAN. 28. The International Cricket Council general manager (cricket) Dave Richardson said that the LG ICC Test and ODI ratings and player rankings are based on `facts on score sheets, less complicated than the preceding one, and does not take into account details such as margins of victory and state of the pitch.' At a workshop organised for the media, the former South African wicketkeeper explained the formula devised by London-based scorer and statistician, David Kendrix, for the LG Test championship and ODI matches and by Ted Dexter Associates for the individual player rankings. The ratings for Tests and one-dayers take into account, all Test and series results, reflect the strength of the opposition and current form of teams and players and ignore the state of the pitch. A point is awarded for each Test match and a bonus point for a series win. No bonus point is there for one-day Internationals. "The player rankings are a little complicated, but not difficult to follow. The batsmen and bowlers would be ranked on a 0-1000 scale, with the batsmen receiving more value for `rapid scoring' and the bowler receiving value for `economical bowling'."
