Extended free cycle scheme launched

CHENNAI, JAN. 28. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, today launched the extended free cycle scheme for 2,49,750 girl students of the backward, most backward and denotified communities studying in 2,254 government and aided higher secondary schools.

Launching the Rs. 44.76-crore scheme at the Secretariat here, she handed over cycles to six standard XI and XII students from Chennai schools. Free cycles were given to 120 others at the function.

To encourage girls

An official release here said the scheme for Adi Dravida and Scheduled Tribe students was introduced on September 15, 2001 to encourage girls to continue their education.

Cycles were distributed to 56,525 Adi Dravida, Scheduled Tribe and Dalit Christian-convert students at a cost of Rs. 620.19 lakhs in 2001-2002. A total of 47,501 students were given cycles at a cost of Rs.833.15 lakhs in 2002-2003. The next year 50,384 students got cycles, costing Rs.798.13 lakhs, official sources said.

As the scheme enabled girls to continue their studies and to act independently, the Chief Minister extended the scheme to students belonging to the backward, most backward and denotified communities. The extended scheme would benefit students in classes XI and XII.

The cycles had additional fittings such as a full chain-guard and reflectors on the wheels, the front-basket and the mudguard, the sources said. The side stand was powder-coated to prevent corrosion.
