Ending of violence should precede talks: Jana

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, JAN. 28. The Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, has said that the resumption of talks with naxalites will be possible only if they stop violence.

"There is no meaning in one seeking talks when the ultras are on a spree of violence," he said when members of the Ceasefire Monitoring Committee met him at his house here on Friday, pleading for resumption of the dialogue.

He told the delegation which was led by G. Chakrapani that there was neither an encounter nor provocation from the Government side since January 18 when the Committee met him last pleading against encounters, but the naxalites were on a rampage. He said they had killed 18 persons so far this month in addition to seven last month. He expressed anguish at the incident in which the Maoists had blasted landmine yesterday targetting an RTC bus full with passengers.

Mr Reddy appealed to the naxalites to exercise restraint as done by the police paving way for second round of talks.
