MADIKERI, JAN. 29. There is a move to increase the number of days the legislature meets to 100 days a year. The State Government has been informed about the issue, said the Acting Chairman of the Legislative Council, V.R. Sudarshan. He told presspersons here on Saturday after inaugurating the office of C.S. Arun Machaiah, MLC, that the legislature sessions have to be modelled on the lines of the sessions of Parliament. Increasing the legislature sessions will help peoples' representatives to deliberate on issues of importance, which will aid the process of development, he said. He had discussed the issues with all concerned, including the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, H.K. Patil, and the Revenue Minister, M.P. Prakash, Mr. Sudarshan added.
Live telecast
Mr. Sudarshan said a plan to provide live coverage of the proceedings in both Houses of the legislature on Doordarshan is on the anvil. The issue is being discussed with the Doordarshan authorities, he said and added that he will raise the topic with the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, during his visit to Bangalore on February 12. The issue was discussed at the All-India Presiding Officers' Conference recently, Mr. Sudarshan said. Though some private channels have been allowed to cover the proceedings, they are subject to certain conditions. There are a few States that currently allow live telecast of legislature proceedings. Live coverage by a national channel will be in keeping with the public good, he said. Mr. Sudarshan, who praised the contribution of Kodavas to the nation and the State, particularly in the areas of defence and sports, said senior leaders such as M.C. Nanaiah and A.K. Subbaiah have set an example for others to follow in the Legislative Council. He assured the people of Kodagu that priority will be given to representatives from the district in the Upper House to air their views on topics of importance. To the charge that Kodagu has been neglected by the State Government, he said: "No Government can ignore Kodagu."
