Ex-BMP employee's death shrouded in mystery

BANGALORE, JAN. 29. A retired employee of Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his house in Fraser Town police station limits on Friday.

The police said that the body of P.N. Gopinath (67), who retired as pharmacist, was lying in a pool of blood at his house in Lazar Layout. He had a stab injury in the abdomen.

According to the police, around 10.30 p.m. on Thursday, Gopinath quarrelled with his wife, Saraswathi, over a domestic issue and slapped her. Their son, Ajay, intervened and took his mother into a room.

Gopinath went into another room. Around 11.30 p.m. Ajay saw his father writing something on a piece of paper. When Ajay went into his father's room around 8.30 a.m. on Friday, he found him dead, the police said.

On a complaint by Ajay, the Fraser Town police have registered a case. The police said they were yet to ascertain whether it was a case of suicide or murder.

Apart from the Gopinath couple, Ajay's wife, Devi, and their son, Abhishek, were at the house on Thursday night, the police said.

Woman robbed

Two persons assaulted an elderly woman, who was alone in the house, and robbed her of a gold chain worth Rs. 18,000 on Friday.

The police said the incident occurred around 3 p.m. at the house of Saroja Sambamurthy at Bapuji Extension in Saraswathinagar in Vijayanagar police station limits.

The police said a teenaged boy and a man aged around 40, came to Saroja's house in the guise of telephone repairers and robbed her of the chain. Saroja is a retired telephone operator. The Vijayanagar police have registered a case.

Man found murdered

An unidentified man aged around 30 was found murdered with his throat slit in Doddaballapur police station limits in Bangalore Rural district on Saturday.

The police said that passers-by found the body near Machagondanahalli village on the Nandi Hills Road on Saturday morning. The police suspect that the man was from Andhra Pradesh. The Doddaballapur police have registered a case.

Businessmen held

The Central Crime Branch officials arrested two businessmen on charges of cheating a Chennai-based firm dealing in body deodorants of Rs. 7 lakhs.

The names of the arrested were given as Suresh Kumar (30) of Manavarthapet and Rajesh Kumar (30) of Mavalli. The two are proprietors of Maharaja Marketing Company, Nagarathpet. The other accused in the case, Rakesh Kumar (28) of Nagarathpet, is at large, the police said.

On January 12, the accused procured 200 cartons of deodorants, worth Rs. 7 lakhs, from M. Shahbuddin of Mohan Gift House, Sowcarpet, Chennai, in the name of a non-existing company and cheated him, the police said. On a complaint by Shahbuddin, the police arrested the accused and recovered the goods from their godown at Nagarathpet.

Recovered

The Byatarayanapura police arrested three persons on charges of robbery and recovered from them gold ornaments, silver articles, a camera, and a motorcycle, together worth Rs. 1.50 lakhs.

The names of the arrested were given as Vinod alias Varadaraj (22) of Sriramapuram, Bhaskar (21) of Hanumanthanagar and Suresh (27) of Hassan district. Two of their accomplices are at large, the police said.

Posing as television cable repairers, they had entered two houses at Manjunathnagar and Cottonpet and robbed lonely women of the valuables, the police said.

Murder alleged

The Bannerghatta police have registered a case against Muniraju of Gottigere following a complaint that he murdered his wife, Ambika (22). Ambika's sister, Mangala, lodged the complaint on Friday.

According to the complaint, Ambika was admitted to Victoria Hospital on December 6, 2004, after she suffered burns at her house. After she was discharged from the hospital, she was admitted to a private hospital where she died on Friday. Mangala alleged that Muniraju had set Ambika on fire.
