dated January 31, 1955: Award recipients felicitated

Over 1,000 South Indian residents of New Delhi gathered at a function on January 29 to felicitate Presidential award recipients from their part of the country. Among the recipients were Mr. C. Rajagopalachari and Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, both of whom received the Bharat Ratna. Paying tributes to the recipients, Mr. T.L. Venkatarama Aiyar, Judge of the Supreme Court, who presided over the function, said they did not go out seeking honour but honour had "sought them and possessed them because of their achievements in their respective fields." Of Rajaji, he said, he had few equals for clear and logical thinking. He left his profession of which he had been a leader and joined politics at a time when it was not an avenue to power. Referring to Dr. Radhakrishnan, Mr. Venkatarama Aiyar said he represented India truly in his culture and philosophy. Replying to the felicitations, Mr. Rajagopalachari said there had been a controversy over the practice of conferring honours after Independence. In his view, it would have been wrong to receive titles from the foreigners who wanted to "put us into their pockets." The situation today was, however, different because titles were conferred by "friends" who had known them closely and worked with them closely, "who know our faults and our virtues." Dr. Radhakrishnan said whatever doubts one might have about the revival of the conferment of these distinctions, "one great advantage we have is we understand that it has given so much satisfaction that some of us are being honoured." For him, it was a privilege to be honoured along with Rajaji.
