Bihar abductions

Sir, — This refers to the editorial, "Badlands of Bihar" (Jan. 29). The lawlessness in the State portends a danger to federalism. Communalism is an evil no doubt but casteism is no less evil. Bihar might have kept communalism away but that is no big achievement considering the lawlessness in the State.

V. Krishnan,
Chennai

Sir, — That the crime level in Delhi is unacceptable or "there is something out of the ordinary in the near simultaneity of the kidnappings" in different parts of Bihar in no way mitigates the situation in the State.

Sunil K. Iyengar,
Bangalore

Sir, — Is this the democracy of Gandhi's and Nehru's dreams?

T. Pandian,
Panruti, T.N.

Sir, — That the spate of abductions comes on the eve of elections makes the issue more curious.

Whoever is behind the kidnappings should see reason and not use children as pawns to achieve political ends.

N. Nageswaran,
Chennai

Sir, — The kidnappings are sure to have a serious impact on school-going children. The country's future is at stake.

Farooq Ali Khan,
Varanasi, U.P.
