What the code says

Sir, — This refers to the disrespect shown to the National Flag on Republic Day (Letters, Jan. 29). Part I of the Flag Code states clearly that the flag shall be made of hand-spun and hand-woven wool/cotton/silk khadi bunting. The Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, prohibits burning, mutilating, defacing, destroying and trampling upon the Flag. While Flags made of paper are allowed to be waved on occasions of important national, cultural and sports events, discarding them on the ground after the event is prohibited. The Act says "as far as possible, it should be disposed of in private consistent with the dignity of the Flag ... "
