ERODE, JAN. 30. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister, P.C. Ramasamy, today inaugurated two Direct Paddy Procurement Centres at Avalpoondurai and Elumathur. Paddy was being procured from October 1, 2004, at seven taluk headquarters. In all, 11 DPCs now function in Erode district. He assured that the Civil Supplies Corporation would procure the paddy from farmers and would pay the amount fixed by the Government. The Minister said that within the last three-and-a-half years, Rs. 8.41 crores was spent on construction of godowns in Regulated Marketing Committees. He said during this year, Rs. 15 crores was sanctioned for improvement of infrastructure in the regulated markets. He added that in Elumathur Regulated Market, a new building was constructed at a cost of Rs. 86 lakhs. The building construction work was in progress at the Avalpoondurai Regulated Market at a cost of Rs. 1.50 crores.
New buildings
The Minister said that at Kavindapady, a building had been constructed at a cost of Rs. 1 crore by the Regulated Marketing Committee for the marketing of jaggery powder. Similarly for the cotton market, a building was constructed at a cost of 1.50 crores in Bhoodapady Regulated Market. All efforts were being taken by the Government for the proper maintenance of the Regulated Markets, where all the agricultural products were auctioned in the presence of farmers, the Minister said. The District Revenue Officer, K. Nagarajan, presided, and the Chairman of the Regulated Marketing Committee, V.P. Periyasamy, spoke.
