Madikeri
By Our Staff Correspondent
MADIKERI, JAN. 30. The breakaway faction of the Janata Dal (Secular) led by the former MLC A.K. Subbaiah is thinking about contesting the elections to gram panchayats in Kodagu on its own. The development comes in the backdrop of the suspension of Mr. Subbaiah from the Janata Dal (S) recently. A meeting of local leaders said to be supporters of Mr. Subbaiah took place in Virajpet on Sunday. V.P. Shashidhar of Somwarpet, who is also a member of the Kodagu Zilla Panchayat, B.T. Pradeep of Napoklu, Neravanda Umesh of Ballamavati, Hafeez Khan of Virajpet, Cheranda Nanda Subbaiah of Maldare, Kiriyamada Belliappa of Hudikeri, Ravi Thammaiah of Mukkodlu and others participated in the meeting, according to sources. Though gram panchayats elections are held on apolitical basis, allying with parties other than the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (S) came up for discussion at the meeting chaired by Mr. Subbaiah, sources said. This is the first meeting of the breakaway faction, and it is said that any decision on contesting the gram panchayat elections will be taken after consulting workers who have rallied behind Mr. Subbaiah after his suspension from the Janata Dal (S). The leaders who took part in the meeting decided not to identify themselves with the Janata Dal (S) district unit office-bearers, including its President, V.P. Aiyappa, and the State unit General Secretary, K.B. Shantappa. They alleged that Mr. Aiyappa was made the President without consulting Mr. Subbaiah, who was the then district in charge of the Janata Dal (S), sources said. The fact that the State Government is not keen on conducting elections to gram panchayats as scheduled in February but intends to postpone it by at least three months by promulgating an Ordinance was also discussed in length at the meeting.
