CUDDAPAH, JAN. 30. Illiteracy, lack of confidence and matured thinking were factors leading to exploitation of rural women with lures of lucrative earnings, lamented the Andhra Pradesh Women's Finance Corporation Chairperson, P. Krishnamma, on Sunday. Stressing the need for rise in literacy among girls, she advised them to forge ahead with confidence and self-reliance. Speaking at a seminar on `Empowerment of Kishore Balika' in `Cuddapotsavalu' here, she advised rural people to educate their girl children. Stating that 480 mahila mandalis were formed so far since 1972, she assured to interact with rural women during her tours and extend assistance for their empowerment. The Superintendent of Police, V.C. Sajjanar, exhorted adolescent girls to take their lives as a challenge, but be wary. Considerable number of women suffered from AIDS due to lack of awareness, he said and wanted uninhibited interactions on AIDS prevention measures. Sex workers of Rayachoti were being rehabilitated by the Government, he said. He urged women to progress by availing of their quota.
Economic empowerment
The Project Director of ICDS, Leelavathi, said education, social and economic empowerment would further women's progress. Srirao Sameera of a Tirupati-based NGO, WINS, lamented that AIDS was spreading due to women's incomprehension on the preventive aspects. Elocution contest on flesh trade, child marriages and child labour and folk song, dance recital followed. The Velugu Programme Manager, R. Ramadevi, and girls from several mandals participated.
