`Extensive research on folk literature imperative'

By Our Staff Correspondent

BIDAR, JAN. 30. Scholars have neglected the collection and preservation of folk arts and literature, writer A.K. Rameshwar said here on Sunday.

Speaking at a session on "Neglected dimensions of folk literature," organised as part of the national level conference on folk literature at Karnataka College, Mr. Rameshwar said that even after decades of research and compiling of work in the field of folk literature, some arts and literature unique to parts of the State and sections of society are still unrepresented.

Mr. Rameshwar said that some researchers had earned money and achieved fame after compiling and publishing songs and tales collected from poor folk artistes. But neither the popularity nor the money has reached the artistes. They continue to remain unrecognised and poor, he said.

Oral tradition

Writer and Kannada professor Saraswati Chimmalagi said that folk literature, even though it is passed on through the oral tradition, has survived centuries due to its inherent strength. It has evolved out of the pain and suffering of the common man. Ms. Chimmalagi said that there is a need to study folk literature with special emphasis on the feminine element involved in it as over three fourths of the folk literature was produced by women.
