MYSORE, JAN. 30. The Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, today said that he favours reservation for weaker sections in the private sector.
Inauguration
Inaugurating the Bahujan Students' Conference at Town Hall here, Mr. Siddaramaiah said that social justice and economic empowerment programmes should be implemented with conviction and "not with an eye on the vote bank." The Deputy Chief Minister hailed the contribution of B.R. Ambedkar to bring about social justice in the country. Mr. Siddaramaiah said the Dalit leader and the philosopher-composer Kanakadasa had to face a lot of insults in their time for the work that they were doing. He regretted that there were certain sections in society that wanted the exploitation of weaker sections to continue.
Appeal
He appealed to the marginalised sections of the society to organise themselves. He also urged the marginalised sections to capture political power to ensure that they get social equality. The president of the State unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), B. Gopal; the party's Mysore district unit's general secretary, N. Mahesh; the former Minister H. Vishwanath; and the president of the Mysore Zilla Panchayat, K.C. Balaram, were present on the occasion.
