No backtracking on free power, says Rosaiah

By Our Staff Reporter

CUDDAPAH, JAN. 30. The Government is modifying the power policy to effectively sustain free power supply, but not backtracking from its pre-poll promise, the Minister for Finance, K. Rosaiah, said on Sunday.

Farmers owning less than 2.50 acres of land would be extended free power, while nominal charges would be levied on those having more land-holding, he told a press conference at the Proddatur R&B guesthouse. The Government proposes to extend subsidised power supply to 13 lakh poor households, rather than provide free power to three lakh one-bulb households, he said.

Irrigation projects and agriculture would be accorded priority in the ensuing budget and allocations made keeping in view the public needs. Emphasis would be laid on setting up new industrial units and employment generation. The Congress is committed to free power supply by streamlining the power sector, he said and refuted the Telugu Desam Party's charges that the free power promise was diluted. The Government would ensure public welfare, without bowing to the World Bank conditions, Mr. Rosaiah asserted.

Tirade

The Government was not averse to hiking employees' salaries and a decision would be taken next month at a meeting to be presided over by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the Finance Minister said.

Mr. Rosaiah launched a tirade against the TDP alleging that its negligence had left several problems unresolved. The agricultural growth rate fell from 23.18 per cent in 1993-94 to 13.15 per cent in 2003-04, which evinced the previous Government's apathy to the sector, he alleged. He charged the TDP Government with squandering public funds in the guise of development. The YSR Government sanctioned and released pension arrears of 22 months and ordered payment of Panchayat Raj teachers' salaries through the treasury, he said. The Cuddapah MP, Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy, Proddatur MLA, N. Varadarajulu Reddy, and Congress leaders, E.V. Sudhakar Reddy, Chandra Obul Reddy and Basheer Ahmed, also took part.
