A foreigner garlands the Gandhi statue at the beach in Pondicherry on Sunday.
PONDICHERRY, JAN. 30. The Lt. Governor, M.M Lakhera, and the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, today paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his death anniversary, which is observed as Martyrs Day. Others who paid homage to the "father of the nation" include the Agriculture Minister, A. Namassivayam, the Education Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan, legislators N. Gangadharan and S.P. Sivakumar, the District Collector, V. Candavelou, the Senior Superintendent of Police Sunil Garg, the Secretary to Information and Publicity, R.M. Pillai, a host of officers and freedom fighters. Students of the Bharathiar Palkalai Koodam presented hymns dearest to the Mahatma. A two-minute silence was observed at 11 a.m. The functionaries of the Pondicherry Pradesh Congress Committee and its youth wing, volunteers of the Janata Dal (S) and the former Chief Minister, S. Ramassamy, garlanded the statue of the Mahatma. Earlier, the Chief Minister and the office-bearers of the Congress committee paid homage to the portrait of Gandhi on the premises of the party office in the town.
