VISAKHAPATNAM, JAN. 30. A ship of the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) on Sunday rescued 10 fishermen from drowning off the Visakhapatnam coast. The fishermen were adrift when their mechanised trawler capsized in the early hours of Sunday following ingress of water into the engine compartment on the high seas, about six nautical miles from Visakhapatnam. The ship, INS Gaj, Indian Navy's Ocean-going tug on a routine exercise on the sea commanded by Yogesh Athavale, sighted the capsized trawler and the fishermen clinging to the upturned bottom of the boat. The crew immediately swung into action and manoeuvred the ship close to them. The rough sea and strong winds made the rescue operation difficult. The survivors were brought aboard the ship with the help of lifebuoys and ropes. Divers went into the water to assist the visibly shaken and exhausted men in climbing up the ladder. The rescued fishermen were provided first-aid and food. According to the survivors, their trawler was buffeted by strong winds when they were returning from Gopalpur in Orissa on Saturday night. The fishermen belong to villages in and around Visakhapatnam.
