BHIMAVARAM, JAN. 30. A 40-foot `ratham' (chariot) of Gunupudi Someswara Janardhana Swamy temple, one of the `Pancharamas' in the State, was totally destroyed in fire last night. The temple archakas suspect it to be the handiwork of some miscreants. Ch. Suri Babu, who saw the chariot in flames, and the temple watchman, D. Adinarayana, alerted the fire staff. By the time the fire personnel reached the spot, the chariot was totally destroyed. The chariot was made in 2000 at a cost of Rs. 9 lakhs. The Endowments Assistant Commissioner, N. Vijay Kumar, the Assistant Superintendent of Police, P.V. Kanna Rao, and Narsapur DSP, R. Sivarama Raju, the Circle-Inspector, N. Venkat Reddy, and the Mavullamma temple executive officer, V. Narasimha Raju, visited the spot. A clues team and a dog squad were pressed into service. The police said that they would investigate it from all angles. Meanwhile a `protest march' was taken out by archakas and employees of the temple on Sunday. They urged officials to ensure that such incidents would not recur.
